Tutorial on how to perform firmware upgrade for Dell R730 Server with VMware vSphere installed

Perform Firmware Upgrade for Dell R730 – iDRAC

  1. Download latest Dell IDRAC firmware iDRAC_2.70.70.70_A00.exe and extract it to C:\temp

  2. login to IDRAC and upload the C:\tem[\firmimg.d7 in Overview – iDRAC Settings – Update and Rollback.

Click Install to update the iDRAC firmware

View the Progress in Overview – Server – Job Queue

Perform Firmware Upgrade for Dell R730

Wait for the firmware upgrade to complete, and verify the iDRAC firmware had been upgraded to 2.70.70.70

Perform Firmware Upgrade for Dell R730 – BIOS

  1. Download the Latest version of BIOS R730-021100.efi to C:\Temp\BIOS211

  2. Create a IMG file by selecting Virtual Media – Create Image

  1. Select Source Folder – C:\Temp\BIOS211 and save as C:\Temp\BIOS211.img

Select Virtual Media – Map Removable Disk to mount the C:\temp\BIOS211.img

  1. Select Next Boot – BIOS Boot Manager

  1. Put the VMware ESXi Host in Maintenance Mode in vCenter and reboot it manually

  2. Select System Utilities

  1. Select BIOS File Update Explorer

  1. Select BIOS211 – Virtual Floppy Drive and select R730-021100.efi

9 Select Continue BIOS Update

  1. Wait for the BIOS Update to complete

  1. Reboot the server once BIOS Update is completed successfully

  1. Verify the BIOS had been updated to 2.11
