Detail Disk Usage for XenDesktop MCS and AppDisk

Please refer to the following my detail finding on Detail Disk Usage for XenDesktop MCS and AppDisk

I had created a Windows 2012 R2 Standard Server with latest patches (VM) and convert it to Template in VMware

MCS will copy the VM Template, and create a BASE disk (Same Size) in VMware Data Store and all the XenApp VM will only need little space (30MB in my environment + X GB of RAM as when VM are power on, it will utilize some storage (equivalent to it RAM assigned) Based on the data in my lab, to provision 5 x XenApp Server (User Data: Discard) using MCS, you will need

  • 1 x Windows 2012 R2 Standard Server with latest patches – 18.2GB
  • 1 x VM Based Disk (Master Image for XenApp)
  • 5 x XenApp Server with 8GB RAM (5 x 30MB + (5 x 8GB)) = 150MB + 40GB

Total = 40GB (Estimated)

Screen shot captured in my Lab

  • CTX-XenApp-Template – My VM Template
  • XenApp-BaseDisk – Master Image for XenApp
  • XenApp001 – XenApp Server #1
  • XenApp002 – XenApp Server #2

DiskUsage-02

Disk Usage for AppDisk Availble in XenDesktop 7.8, and only support XenServer& VMware now

I had created 3 x AppDisk in Citrix Studio in my lab and all link to 1 x Windows 2012 R2 Standard Server (XenApp 7.8)

DiskUsage-03

Tested:

  • I had created Office 2010 & Office 2013 AppDisk and link to XenApp to verify that multiple version of Office cannot run in XenApp successfully – Please refer to the following screen shot for more information

DiskUsage-04

Office 2010 & 2013 running concurrently in Windows 2012 R2 (XenApp Server)

How is the App Disk Structure look like in VMware Data Store

First, we will need to run the following powershell to identify the Virtual Disk ID in DDC

Add-PSSnapin Citrix.*
Get-AppLibAppDisk | Select AppDiskName,Packages, VirtualDiskId

DiskUsage-05

Login to vSphere Host using SSH, and you will see 3 x AppDisk are created
DiskUsage-06

DiskUsage-07

For Small Disk (3GB) with Google Chrome & Foxit installed, it will have occupied 2.1GB of Disk Space

DiskUsage-08

For Medium Disk (20GB) with Office 2010 ProPlus with SP2 installed, it will have occupied 9.3GB of Disk Space

DiskUsage-09

For Medium Disk (20GB) with Office 2013 ProPlus SP1 installed, it will have occupied 5.3GB of Disk Space

DiskUsage-10

All the AppDisk will be attached to the XenApp001 Server automatically when power on, and users can access those Application located in AppDisk

Applications installed in AppDisk are working very well in my lab, and will continue to explore how AppDisk works with PVS
